A little light at the doorway
On the evening before Diwali, Mira placed a clay lamp beside the front door. She wanted to light it immediately, but her grandmother said, “Let us wait until everyone has a place to sit.” Together they cleared a step, filled a bowl with water for tired visitors, and put a small mat near the doorway. When the lamp was finally lit, its flame looked no bigger than a mustard seed. Still, every person who arrived saw the clear step, the water, and the welcoming mat. Mira understood that the lamp had not made the welcome by itself. Their preparation had.
What the light teaches
Diwali light can invite us to notice the practical kindness around a celebration: clearing space, sharing food, and making another person feel expected.
