Origin and background
Gujarati New Year, commonly called Bestu Varas, begins a new year in the Gujarati calendar tradition after Diwali. The calendar year and regional customs are rooted in the Vikram Samvat tradition.
Description
Families visit temples, open new account books, exchange greetings and sweets, and welcome prosperity for the year ahead. Business customs vary by community.
Why it matters
Bestu Varas is a time for gratitude, fresh beginnings, relationships, and hopes for a generous year. The date follows the Gujarati calendar rather than the Gregorian New Year.
