Two Ends of a Thread

A rakhi becomes a reminder that care travels in both directions between siblings, cousins, friends, and chosen family.

The promise goes both ways

Ira had one rakhi and two cousins she loved. She worried that the thread could belong to only one person, until her aunt showed her the two ends. “A bond has more than one side,” she said. Ira tied the rakhi to one cousin, and the other cousin tied a ribbon around Ira’s notebook. Then all three wrote one promise: to notice when someone needed help and to ask for help when they needed it. The thread was small, but the promises made the room feel larger.

What the thread teaches

Care is strongest when it is mutual. Relationships can include siblings, cousins, friends, mentors, neighbors, and chosen family.
