Randhan Chhath

The Gujarati preparation day for Sheetala Satam, when families traditionally cook food for the following day.

Origin and background

Randhan Chhath is a Gujarati observance held one day before Sheetala Satam. Its name refers to cooking and preparation, because families traditionally make food in advance for the following day.

Description

Families may prepare the next day’s dishes, clean the cooking space, and make offerings according to local custom. Sheetala Satam is then observed with prepared food rather than a newly lit cooking fire in many households.

Why it matters

Randhan Chhath shows how a Gujarati seasonal observance carries devotion through food preparation, household care, and continuity from one day to the next.
